F the Golfer is a rotating golf drinking game where one player is in the hot seat every hole. Three automatic drink events happen per hole: fairway, green, and putts. The “Golfer” either dishes out sips or takes them based on how they play. Then the chair rotates and it’s someone else’s turn to get roasted.
It’s a spin on F the Dealer, the classic card drinking game โ but instead of cards, the golf course is dealing the hands, and there’s nowhere to hide when your name’s on top.

The Quick Version
Players: Best with 4. Works with 3.
The Hot Seat (we’ll refer to as the “Golfer”): One player per hole. Rotate in order on each hole.
Three automatic drink events per hole:
- FIR โ Golfer hits the fairway = Others drink 1 sip each. Miss = Golfer drinks 1 sip.
- GREEN โ On any shot from 100โ220 yards, Golfer hits the green = Others drink 1 sip each. Miss = Golfer drinks 1 sip.
- Putts โ 1-putt = Others drink 2 sips each. 2-putt = everyone drinks 1 sip. 3+ putts = Golfer drinks 2 sips.
No calls, no wagers. The Golfer’s shot is the verdict.
Why F the Golfer Is So Fun
Most golf drinking games are broken one of two ways โ either one poor bastard gets buried all round, or nobody’s really on the hook and you’re just drinking beer and calling it a game.
F the Golfer fixes both with one rule: the chair rotates. Nobody can pile on one player, because that player’s turn is over in a few minutes and yours is coming. And because every hole has three separate drink events, there’s no dead hole โ FIR on the tee, GREEN on the approach, putts on the green. This gives plenty of opportunities to talk smack and exchange banter.
Game Setup
Player count. Built for a foursome. It’s one of the most fun golf games for 4 players when drinks are involved. Works with three โ just means the chair comes around more often.
Handicaps. None. This is pure performance โ the scratch golfer and the 22-handicap get the same treatment. It evens out more than you’d think. If you want a format that levels the field instead, our free golf handicap calculator handles every game we cover.
Rotation. Agree on hot seat order before the first tee. Player 1 is in the hot seat on hole 1, Player 2 on hole 2, and so on. Each player gets the chair an equal amount of times. For a foursome, this means that two holes (holes 17 and 18) are handled a little differently. All holes split evenly for a group of three.
Holes 17 and 18 (Foursome Only). The final two holes break the rotation and hand the chair to the scorecard:
- Hole 17 Hot Seat = player with the lowest total score through 16. The leader gets the spotlight.
- Hole 18 Hot Seat = player with the highest total score through 17. Redemption shot for the guy getting smoked.
- Tiebreaker?: Flip a tee or do a little rock-paper-scissors.
No gimmes. Every putt gets holed out. Gimmes and the putts rule don’t mix. For a refresher on pace and keeping the round moving, check our golf etiquette guide.
Stakes. A sip is an actual sip. This game needles, it doesn’t nuke. Drink water, eat at the turn, don’t be that guy.

How to Play (Rules & Scoring)
Every hole plays out the same way. The Golfer plays their own ball under the normal Rules of Golf. The Others watch and drink accordingly.
FIR โ Fairway in Regulation
The rule: Ball at rest on the short grass of the intended fairway = FIR. Anywhere else โ rough, bunker, trees, water, OB โ is a miss.
Outcome:
- FIR โ Each Other drinks 1 sip.
- Miss โ Golfer drinks 1 sip.
Par 3s: No FIR on par 3s. Tee shot is the approach โ skip straight to GREEN (some groups double the GREEN sip count).
GREEN โ Green in Regulation
The rule: On any shot the Golfer plays from 100 to 220 yards from the pin, if the ball comes to rest on the putting surface, that’s a GREEN. Fringe and collar don’t count.
The 100โ220 range: Inside 100 is scoring-wedge range โ too automatic. Outside 220 is a prayer โ too unlikely. The 100โ220 window is where real golf happens. Adjustable by group โ aggressive crews can widen to 80โ240, tighter groups can narrow to 120โ200. Set the number on the first tee and lock it for the round.
Outcome:
- GREEN โ Each Other drinks 1 sip.
- Miss โ Golfer drinks 1 sip.
Multiple qualifying shots: If the Golfer takes two shots from inside the 100โ220 window on the same hole (say, an approach from 180 and a re-approach from 140 after a chunk), you get some bonus drinking action: sip to both shots.
No qualifying shot: If the Golfer never plays from inside the range (OB miss, layup from 240, etc.), no GREEN event that hole. Happens a few times a round. Fuzzy on how OB and hazards play out? Check out our helpful cheat sheet in our golf course penalties explained post.
Putts
The rule: Count the Golfer’s putts on the green. No calling, no wagering โ the outcome is automatic.
Outcome:
- 1-putt โ Each Other drinks 2 sips.
- 2-putt โ Everyone (Golfer + Others) drinks 1 sip.
- 3+ putts โ Golfer drinks 2 sips.
If 3-putts are a recurring theme in your group, layer Snake on top of F the Golfer for a side bet that turns every lag into a sweat-fest.
Chip-ins: If the Golfer holes out from off the green, reward the magic – automatic 3 sips for the Others.

Variations to Try
The Sweep. FIR + GREEN + 1-putt on the same hole = Sweep. The Golfer assigns 2 bonus sips to anyone of their choosing. Rewards a clean hole, giving the Golfer something to swing for when they need a little revenge.
Par 3 Doubles. No FIR on par 3s, so double the GREEN payout to 2 sips on par 3s only. Every tee shot into an island green becomes must-watch TV.
Widen the GREEN range for aggressive groups. 80โ240 yards pulls more shots into the wager and raises sip volume. Good for long rounds with serious drinkers.
Penalties. Water hazard, lost ball, OB? Drink up, cowboy. 1 sip per penalty.
Tips & Strategy
Play your normal game when you’re the Golfer. The spotlight punishes hero swings. Fairway and middle green beats pin-hunting every time, and every safe shot makes the Others drink.
Know who’s hot before you get the chair. If Jake just shot even through 4, the group’s already drinking plenty. When it’s your turn, don’t try to match him โ play your game and let the next guy screw it up.
Common mistakes: Reaching for par when you should’ve laid up (GREEN miss + likely 3-putt is 3 sips you didn’t need), picking up instead of holing out (not allowed, but guys try it).
Know Your Limit. This is still a game of golf. Don’t get so hammered you can’t even count putts. Pace yourself. Be safe.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you play F the Golfer with 3 players?
Yes. Each player is the Golfer 6 times through 18. Sip volume stays manageable because there are only 2 Others drinking on a FIR or GREEN instead of 3. For more formats built around threesomes, see our 3-player golf games collection.
What if the Golfer hits a hole-in-one?
Everyone except the Golfer drinks the rest of their beer. Your buddy just went electric. Downing your beer is the least you can do to honor the moment.
What if the Golfer is way out of position and never plays from 100โ220?
No GREEN event that hole. It happens. Move on.
Do penalty strokes affect anything?
Only if you implement the variant to penalize penalties with 1 sip. Totally up to your group.

Final Thoughts
F the Golfer fixes what most golf drinking games get wrong โ it never lets the round settle into boredom.
Every hole has three drink events, somebody’s always on the hot seat, and the 17/18 finishers for a foursome make sure the leader AND the loser both get a final moment in the spotlight.
Grab your buddies, a cooler, and a scorecard next weekend. By the turn, you’ll know exactly who in your group can play under pressure and who should stop swinging that driver.
