Tee Ball is a three-player golf betting game where the best tee shot on each hole plays alone against the other two for four points.
Everyone drives, the ball in the best position is identified, and that player is on their own for the hole while the other two combine as a team. Low score takes the points.
The twist is that the solo player has the potential to earn more points than the duo. Read on for the full breakdown.
MORE 3-PLAYER MONEY GAMES
Other formats built for a threesome:
- Nines (5-3-1) โ every hole splits nine points three ways.
- Split Sixes โ six points a hole in three separate one-on-one matches.
- Defender โ one player defends the hole against the other two every time.
Tee Ball needs exactly three players, each playing their own ball. It fits neatly among the golf games for 3 players that keeps a good competition going in a threesome. The pairings change with every tee shot.
Winning the Tee Shot
All three players hit their drives, then the group decides whose ball sits in the best position. That player goes solo for the hole. The other two become partners for the hole, playing a better ball against the lone player.
Agree on what “best” means before you start. Most groups use best position rather than pure distance, so a 250-yard drive in the fairway beats a 290-yard bomb in the native grass. Settle whether you are judging by length, by angle to the pin, or by simple lie, because it decides who goes solo.
Scoring the Hole
There are four points on every hole. Play the hole out and compare the lone player’s score to the better ball of the pair:
- Lone player wins outright. The solo player takes all four points.
- The pair wins. If either partner posts the low score, each of them earns two points.
- The hole ties. If the lone score matches the pair’s better ball, the four points carry to the next hole.
A birdie or better that wins the hole doubles the points, so a lone player who makes birdie to win takes eight instead of four. Ties stack the pot, and a couple of halved holes in a row can leave twelve or sixteen points riding on a single tee shot. Most points after 18 holes wins, and the group settles up their bets based on the difference in points.

STRATEGY TIP
Club down off the tee if the fairway is tight. You want the solo seat on the holes where you can make a birdie and cash the double. Grinding out a bogey alone on a brutal hole helps nobody, so handing the drive away there is a fine outcome.

How Tee Ball Differs From Wolf and Banker
Tee Ball belongs to the family of one-against-two games, but the way you land in the solo seat is what sets it apart.
In Wolf, the lone role rotates by tee order and the Wolf chooses whether to go solo after watching the others hit. It is a decision. In Banker, one player takes on the rest of the group by agreement and sets the stake. Tee Ball removes the choice entirely. The best drive is placed into the solo seat whether they want it or not, which is why a good long driver can end up going solo there hole after hole.
That forced element makes Tee Ball the more chaotic of the three, and the one where the standings can swing on a single wild tee shot.

Variations Worth Trying
- Net Tee Ball. Apply handicap strokes by index, then score the hole on net. It levels a mixed group and keeps the weakest player live in the pair seat. Run everyone’s number through our handicap calculator first.
- Longest drive only. Judge the solo seat by pure distance in play instead of best position. It hands the bomber the lone seat even more often. Only play this version it all players drive equal distances.
- Carry cap. Limit how high the pot can build on ties, so one hole cannot decide the round on its own. A cap of eight or twelve keeps things sane.
- Four-player Tee Ball. The best drive plays alone against the other three. The solo seat gets even tougher.
Getting sharper off the tee and around the greens is what turns the solo seat from a tax into a real chance, and our practice games and drills library takes aim at both. For more ways to keep a threesome betting, the wider golf betting games collection sorts formats by group size.

Is Tee Ball Worth a Round?
Tee Ball is at its best with three players of roughly similar ability who all think they can drive it. The forced solo seat produces a running debate about who really hits the best long ball, and the birdie doubling rule keeps a trailing player one good hole away from being right back in it.
Just know the game before you tee off. You’d be surprised to learn that the player bombing it past everyone tends to be the one paying. It’s tough to win solo against a pair of best balls, even if you’re 20 yards closer. Find fairways and play steady golf and you’ll increase your odds.
Good luck out there. Thanks for stopping by!
