The Up-and-Down Gauntlet turns every green you miss into a scored attempt. You play a normal round. The only difference is that you write down what happens every time you are chipping or pitching instead of putting.

One round gives you one number, and that number is your scrambling percentage.

You are not tracking your score here. You are collecting data on the part of your game that shows up more often than almost anything else, and that most golfers have never actually measured.

How to Play

Play 18 holes, alone or with your group. Every hole where you miss the green in regulation becomes one attempt.

From there you get two shots to hole out. Do it and you have a save. Take three or more and it is a miss.

At the end of the round, divide your saves by your attempts. That percentage is your score for the game, and it is the same stat the Tour tracks as scrambling.

What Counts as an Attempt?

Keep it simple. Two tallies, saves and attempts:

An attempt: any hole where your ball is not on the putting surface in regulation. That is two shots on a par 4, one on a par 3, three on a par 5. If you are not putting when you get there, you have an attempt.

A save: holing out in two shots or fewer from that spot. A chip and a putt is the normal one. A chip-in counts. So does a long putt from off the green followed by a tap in.

A miss: three or more shots to hole out. It does not matter whether the chip or the putt was the problem, and that is on purpose. The number is about the situation, not the club.

Penalty strokes: if you take a penalty after missing the green, the hole still counts as an attempt and almost certainly as a miss. Do not throw the hole out.

Why Scrambling Is the Number Worth Tracking

Here is the part that surprises people. A scratch player and a 20 handicap save roughly the same number of shots around the green in a round.

The difference is how many chances each of them needed.

A scratch golfer hits a lot more greens, so they only face about ten of these situations a round and convert just over half. If you are a mid or high handicap player you are missing far more greens than that, so you might face sixteen or seventeen attempts and convert closer to a third of them. The same handful of saved shots, from nearly twice the work.

That is why this number matters more the higher your handicap is. Scrambling is a bigger share of your round than it is for anyone better than you, and it is usually the part nobody has ever put a number on.

Where You Actually Stand

Play the Gauntlet once and you will have a percentage. Here is what that percentage means, using Shot Scope data for up-and-downs from inside 50 yards.

Handicap

Up-and-Down Percentage

Scratch (0)

54%

10 HCP

39%

20 HCP

31%

Average, all handicaps 0–25

38%

Source: Shot Scope data, via Golf Monthly. Measured from inside 50 yards.

Find your handicap tier and compare. If you are converting below your tier, scrambling is a weakness and it is costing you shots every single round. If you are above it, this is a strength you can lean on while you fix something else. That read, a real number against a real benchmark, is exactly how our Practice System works. It has 22 more scored games like this one for the range, the putting green and the chipping area.

One honest note on the Tour comparison. PGA Tour scrambling runs around 60%, but it is measured on any missed green at any distance rather than from inside 50 yards, so it is not a straight comparison to the numbers above.

<button

Cutting Your Misses Down

A few things move this number faster than anything else:

Take the safe side of the hole. Short-siding yourself turns a routine save into a low percentage shot. Chipping to the fat part of the green and taking your two putts beats a hero flop that finishes in the rough on the other side.

Use one stroke and change clubs. Most golfers try to hit every chip with a wedge and vary how hard they swing, which is where the chunks and skulls come from. Learn one reliable stroke and let a different club produce a different distance.

Putt it when you can. From tight lies just off the green, a putter is usually the higher percentage play, and your worst putt is far better than your worst chip.

My preferred method is to learn one basic stroke size that you are really comfortable with, and to simply change the club.
Kellie Stenzel, GOLF Top 100 Teacher

And remember what the second half of every attempt actually is. A chip to four feet still needs the putt to drop, so a lot of misses in this game are putting misses wearing a chipping costume. If your tally shows the chip is fine and the putt keeps failing, grab our free putting improvement system and fix that side first. It is a genuinely good PDF and it costs nothing.

If Scrambling Is Your Weak Column

The Gauntlet tells you where you stand. It does not fix anything on its own.

The Practice System pairs a scored, benchmarked test with the matched drills for whatever the test exposes. The short game section covers the exact situations this game throws at you, and the Drills Library handles contact and low point control underneath it.

Play the Gauntlet, find your number, then go work on the thing your own data pointed at.

Get The Practice System

Run the Gauntlet during your next round and start collecting real data on your short game. Real improvement starts with knowing the number, then building a plan around it.

Hit ’em well out there.

Sudden Death is a solo game designed to help you improve your golf game and lower your scores as a byproduct. It’s simple in nature, but tough to accomplish while on the course. It is a game you can play along with any of our other golf formats.

Three specific mistakes end a life in this game, and the goal is finishing with as few deaths as possible (ideally zero). You’re much less concerned about the score when playing this game, but you’ll notice improved scores if you can do well in this game.

There are three ways to lose a life in this game: a three-putt, a penalty stroke, or a complete mishit. If your a mid or high handicap player, most every blow-up hole in golf traces back to one of those three, and blow-up holes are what keep your handicap index high.

How to Play

Play a full round, alone or with company. It doesn’t matter who else is on the course, only what happens to your ball. After every hole, mark down whether any of the three deaths happened. More than one can happen on the same hole, and each counts separately.

A hole with zero deaths is great, but a round with zero deaths across all 18 is the only winning condition, but it’s good to aim for as few deaths as possible until you improve at avoiding these pitfalls.

What Counts As a Death?

In this particular game, you’re trying to avoid three very specific things:

A Three-Putt: Any hole where the putter takes three strokes or more once you’re on the green. A chip or putt from the fringe does not count as your first putt. Only putts that take place on the actual green.

A Penalty Stroke: Any shot that draws a penalty under the Rules of Golf. That covers water balls, out of bounds, a lost ball, or an unplayable lie that gets no genuine relief.

A Complete Mishit: A chunk, a topped shot, a skulled shot, or a total whiff. Any full swing that doesn’t move the ball a reasonable percentage of its intended distance is what counts here. Slices and hooks don’t necessarily count unless they are unreasonably short shots, too. The rule of thumb: a shot ending under half of what the club normally produces counts as a death. A slightly thin 7-iron that still goes the distance and finds the green doesn’t count. A chunked wedge that moves the ball ten feet, when you needed it to go 50 yards counts as a death.

Double and triple+ bogeys don’t really happen on their own.

Look back at almost any blow-up hole and it’s usually one specific mistake. A penalty off the tee could’ve been a smart bogey out of the rough. The three-putt, the penalty, and the mishit are the usual suspects. The double bogey is just what results from them.

Score punishes the same mistake twice, once for the stroke itself and once for the number it turns into. Tracking the cause instead of the score shows which of the three is actually bleeding strokes.

A single-digit handicap keeps this under two a round. Above a 15hcp, three or more is standard.

Penalty Strokes

There isn’t one clean published table for every tier here, but the real numbers that do exist point the same direction. Arccos data puts a 10 handicap at three or more penalty strokes in about one of every four rounds, and a scratch golfer racking up roughly half the penalty strokes of a 10 handicap over their best rounds. Penalty strokes fall the fastest of the three as you improve, because they’re the most avoidable. Almost every one starts with a decision, not a swing flaw.

Complete Mishits

Nobody publishes this one, tour or amateur, because it isn’t a tracked skill category the way putting or scrambling are. It’s closer to a lapse than a level of ability. A scratch golfer can chunk a wedge on an off day just as easily as a 20-handicap can. Treat zero as the target regardless of your number.

Cutting Each One Down

Each death has a different real fix. If you know you’re weak in one of these spots, try these approaches to improve.

Three-putts: The instinct once you’re protecting a clean round is to steer the putt instead of committing to it, and steering causes more three-putts, not fewer. The fix is speed control, not aim. Most three-putts start as a bad-speed first putt, not a missed read. Grab our free putting improvement system and turn putting into your biggest strength. It’s a beautiful and easy to follow PDF and full of value. Enjoy.

Penalty strokes: Almost every one is a decision made under pressure, not a swing that betrayed you. When a shot is in trouble, the percentage play is the smart bogey. Take the punch-out, accept the stroke, and protect the rest of the score. A hero shot that clears the water four times out of five is still the wrong play, because the fifth time is the one that ends up in this column.

Complete mishits: Almost always a rushed transition or a swing you didn’t fully commit to, usually right after a bad shot on the previous hole. Take one real practice swing before any shot that follows a bad one, not as a habit for every shot, but as a reset for the exact moment you’re most likely to rush. And don’t forget to take a breath and move on mentally.
